Kratom for Anxiety: Tips, Dosage, and Best Strains

Along with stress and depression, anxiety is the epidemic of modern life. With over 40 million affected adults, it’s one of the most common mental disorders in the United States.

If you’re one of them you may be considering taking kratom for anxiety relief.

    What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is your body’s natural response to stress. It’s the feeling of fear, worry, or apprehension about something in the future.

You may feel anxious before a job interview, your first date with someone, an important presentation, test or exam, and similar situations.

Similarly to stress, anxiety in itself it isn’t bad. It can actually motivate you to be more attentive, work harder, or pay attention to details you normally won’t.

In one-time situations like the ones described above, anxiety comes and goes. It feels uncomfortable but does not deteriorate your overall quality of life.

    The Dangers of Anxiety

However, if you experience anxiety all the time and longer than 6 months, you may suffer from an anxiety disorder. It can interfere with your everyday life and lower your overall quality of life.

Anxiety can prevent you from enjoying the simple things that you would normally do. In more serious cases, anxiety can even be debilitating and make you miss out on opportunities.

It can even affect the lives of your loved ones in a negative way.

    Different Types of Anxiety

Not everyone experiences anxiety in the same way. It can also be a part of a different disorder.

There are various kinds of anxiety. Some of the most common ones are:

    • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – a permanent state of fear or worry even if the person isn’t experiencing anything that could provoke it.
    • Illness anxiety disorder (also known as hypochondria) – constant anxiety about the state of one’s health.
    • OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) – an anxiety disorder when a person experiences unwanted repetitive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or rituals (compulsions). The person performs the rituals to get rid of the obsessive thoughts. He or she then experiences a short temporary relief from anxiety. Or, on the contrary, an increase in anxiety levels if the ritual is not performed.
    • Panic Disorder – an anxiety disorder when a person experiences periods of intense fear. During these moments, they may have a shortage of breath, increased heart rate, dizziness, chest pain, and more.
    • PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)– it’s anxiety that a person suffers from after witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event such as combat, natural disaster, abuse, assault, or trauma.
    • Social Anxiety Disorder (also known as Social Phobia) – extreme anxiety and self-consciousness when being or doing things in front of other people.

    The Symptoms of Anxiety

As there are different types of anxiety, the symptoms and their intensity can vary from person to person.

You can experience mild anxiety or be completely out of control. Some people may also experience nightmares, painful thoughts, and flashbacks, or panic attacks.

However, some of the most frequent symptoms include:

    • difficulty concentrating,
    • faster heart rate,
    • much harder time falling asleep,
    • rapid breathing,
    • restlessness.

Regardless of how intense your anxiety is, it’s making your life harder and less enjoyable. And natural for you to seek ways to relieve it.

Can You Use Kratom for Anxiety Relief?

The good news is that there are ways of treating anxiety. In mild cases, doctors usually only recommend lifestyle changes.

This can include adding healthy habits and limiting or eliminating unhealthy ones, as well as taking a better care of one’s body.

    Sometimes that can be enough.

However, in more severe cases, doctors normally prescribe medicine and psychotherapy.

Fortunately, there are also various natural ways of dealing with anxiety. Kratom is one of them. It contains a variety of alkaloids, each with their unique properties.

7-hydroxymitragynine is one of the most abundant alkaloids in kratom, and it’s responsible for its painkilling, relaxing, and sedating properties.

    Best Kratom Strains for Anxiety

There is a large variety of kratom vein and strain types. Not each of them provides the same effects. Below are some of our favorite strains of kratom for anxiety:

    1. Red Strains

Reds are often called slow strains. They have lower levels of mitragynine and higher levels of 7-hydroxymitragynine.

As a result, red vein kratom normally relieves pain, relaxes and can help you to fall asleep.

Yet, some red strains such as Red Sumatra and Red Thai are more stimulating, so be sure to check out their specifics before ordering.

    2 Bali Strains

Bali kratom is the most widely available strain and one that’s popular with buyers. It also tends to be one of the most economic strains, primarily because of its availability.

Bali strains are high in 7-hydroxymitragynine produce relaxing effects that can relieve anxiety.

Depending on which strain you choose to take, you may experience side effects such as wobbles and nausea. This may not be pleasant if you’re going through an anxiety attack.

Therefore, measure your doses carefully to monitor the effects. Start with a lower dose and gradually build up until you experience the desired results.

    3. Borneo Strains

Among users, Borneo is one of the most popular strains of kratom for anxiety.

Similarly to Bali strains, it is high in 7-hydroxymitragynine. As a result, it’s excellent for relaxation and anxiety relief.

But, Borneo strains tend to be quite sedating. So, taking Red Borneo right before you go to work may result in you falling asleep. Green Borneo may be a better choice here.

Some users also recommend White Borneo because of its mood-enhancing properties.

So, try different doses and strain colors to see what delivers the best results.

    4. Indo Strains

Indo kratom has similar effects to those of Borneo kratom, yet with slightly less intense sedating effects.

Try reds to relax and fall asleep easier and greens or whites to boost your mood.

    5. Malay Strains

Malay strains are another option for those suffering from anxiety. They calm the mind, improve the mood and produce euphoria. They may be more suitable if you have a busy day ahead.

However, we advise you to start off with Red Malay and try Green Malay next. Stimulating and mood-enhancing effects work for some people while others feel like they cause or make anxiety worse.

Best Dosage of Kratom for Anxiety

Usually, lower doses of kratom result in energizing effects while higher doses tend to be more relaxing and sedating.

Until you know what your body responds to best, always start with taking lower doses. Since 2-3 grams is usually stimulating, 3-4 grams is where relaxing and sedative effects normally start.

Use a sensitive digital scale to measure your dose of kratom for anxiety well. That will help you know how much kratom exactly you need and avoid unpleasant side effects.

What Should You Avoid if You Want to Take Kratom for Anxiety Relief

Generally, most white strains are best to avoid because they are stimulating and can increase your anxiety instead of helping you treat it. Same goes for Thai, Maeng Da, and Vietnamese Kratom.

However, kratom is a natural substance and it may interact differently with individual bodies.

Thus, results may vary per person. Because there are multiple types of anxiety disorders, each of them may also require different effects.

Some users report green and yellow strains to be the best ones to relieve anxiety for them.

Others say that white strains work for them in terms of lowering anxiety levels. That is because they make them feel more positive and upbeat this increasing their overall satisfaction with life.

So, we advise you to start with the reds and experiment with other strains to see what effects they produce on you.

  • Kratom for Stress Relief: Everything You Need to Know

Kratom for Stress Relief: Everything You Need to Know

We live in a very demanding and fast-paced world. You’ve likely found yourself in situations when you’ve had piles of paperwork to deal with and deadlines to meet. All while dealing with family problems or other personal issues. Or something along the lines.

The word you probably use to describe how you feel in such situations is likely “stressed”.

    What Is Stress?

Nowadays stress is often viewed as bad. But it’s not necessarily always like that.

In actuality, stress is your body’s natural response to perceived threats. When you feel that you are in danger, your body goes into a “fight or flight” mode. Your heart starts beating faster, your breathing speeds up, and you’re ready for action.

Stress has helped our ancestors to survive throughout the centuries. It allowed them to escape immediate dangers such as saber-tooth tigers.

In today’s world, we still need stress to keep us alert, motivated, and ready to act in case of danger. It can save us from things like cars ignoring pedestrian crossings. Or if someone is about to attack us.

However, the “fight or flight” response also triggers during situations that aren’t life-threatening. Such as tensions at work, being late, missing or bus, and similar.

    The Dangers of Stress

Do you feel fidgety or restless when you are feeling stressed? Can’t stop eating or have brain fog?

There’s a reason for that. When your body experiences stress, your blood directs to the muscles to make sure you’re ready to do what’s necessary to save your life. This causes body parts like your brain and bodily functions like your digestion to get less blood.

It’s OK in situations that endanger your life because you normally should revert to a stress-free state.

Yet, nowadays, we experience stress more frequently. Sometimes even all the time. This is called acute or chronic stress.

As a result, being exposed to long-term stress can result in a myriad of negative or even life-threatening consequences. These include:

    • headaches,
    • sleep issues,
    • depression,
    • anxiety,
    • digestive problems,
    • skin issues,
    • weight loss or weight gain,
    • inability to control emotions,
    • strained or damaged relationships,
    • high blood pressure,
    • higher risk or heart attack and heart disease,
    • increased risk of developing cancer and different types of chronic disease,
    • greater risk of lung and liver disease,
    • faster aging,

    …and many more.

    Common Treatment for Stress

The most frequent ways of treatment for stress include therapy and medication, such as sleeping pills, tranquilizers, and antidepressants. Some will also require additional medicine for any health issues caused by stress.

Alternative ways of treatment include yoga and meditation, ecotherapy (different outdoor activities), aromatherapy, acupuncture, and massage.

How Can Kratom Help with Stress?

If you look at the most common ways of treating stress, they are mainly non-drug related therapies. Talking therapy, mindfulness and relaxation practices. That’s because the first step towards managing stress is being able to control your mind. More specifically – your thoughts.

Stress in the nowadays circumstances is frequently caused or amplified by negative thoughts. We worry about different things that could or will happen.

That can cause our minds to focus on negative thoughts. When continuously required to do the same action, our brains rewire themselves to automatically do it.

Therefore, if you frequently think negative thoughts, your brain is likely to rewire itself to automatically respond negatively.

This makes it exponentially much harder to change the habit.

People who suffer from stress also tend to experience health issues that may need treatment.

And stress may also trigger depression. That can make it even harder to make the changes necessary to deal with stress.

There are a few reasons why you may want to look into kratom for stress relief.

    Kratom Can Relieve Physical Pain

Kratom for stress relief would be impossible without mitragynine. One of the most potent kratom alkaloids, it can activate the central nervous system’s mu-opioid receptors (MOR). That is also what the painkiller morphine binds with.

As a result, kratom can reduce pain and promote euphoric effects.

Kratom can provide pain relief in a wide range of conditions. Examples include migraines, muscle pain, or even chronic pain.

Kratom Can Boost Energy and Concentration

Stress can drastically affect one’s performance at work and other tasks. Since stress affects the sleep and causes the blood flow to leave the brain, it can lead to brain fog.

Kratom acts as a stimulant. It provides extra energy and motivation for work, studies, and other activities.

Kratom Can Improve the Quality of Sleep

Certain strains, as well as higher doses of kratom, can help with sleep-related issues. It puts your mind in a more restful state and makes it easier to fall and stay asleep.

As a result, you’ll feel more rested in the morning and have more energy. You’ll also have an easier time dealing with stressful situations.

Kratom Can Improve the Mood and Help Deal with Negative Thoughts

If you are continuously exposed to stress, your serotonin and dopamine levels will drop. Serotonin promotes feelings of happiness and well-being. And dopamine is necessary for motivation and the feeling of pleasure.

Kratom alkaloids have the capacity to attach to opium receptors. As a result, your brain will start releasing serotonin and dopamine. Both are needed for you to feel more cheerful and have more positive thoughts.

    Best Kratom for Stress

Generally, red strains will be the most suitable to deal with stress. However, if you feel particularly low on energy, you can try the green or yellow strains, as well.

The effects of kratom can vary from person to person, therefore, you may want to try a few varieties to see what delivers the best kratom stress relief for you.

Red Vein Kratom for Stress Relief

Red vein is chosen by many as best kratom for stress. It has high levels of 7-hydroxymitragynine, yet low levels of mitragynine. That makes it perfect for pain, stress, and anxiety relief. It can also help improve the mood and manage negative thoughts.

7-hydroxymitragynine’s pain-relieving properties can be useful if you are experiencing pain or suffer from health conditions in addition to stress.

Red vein strains come in two varieties:

    • more sedating ones such as Red Bali, and
    • more energizing ones such as Red Borneo, Red Thai, Red Maeng Da, Red Indo, Red Sumatra, and Red Horn.

Red Bali is the most popular and widely available kratom strain. But some users report feeling too drowsy after using it. If that’s your case, it may be best to use it in the evening before you go to sleep.

In the morning or throughout the day, try the more energizing strains instead. Especially if you feel like you need a bit of an energy boost.

Green Vein Kratom for Stress Relief

You’ve experimented with the red strains and feel like you aren’t getting enough energy boost. Or you are feeling particularly sluggish and demotivated and need an extra kick in addition to kratom for stress relief.

For situations and days like this, green vein kratom may be a better fit. A number of users report feeling more positive and energized after using it.

If red vein kratom has strong pain-relieving properties and mild stimulating effects, green vein is more balanced. Its analgesic properties are milder but stimulating properties stronger. Yet both are at an approximately same intensity.

Some green strains that you can try are Green Malay, Green Bali, Green Maeng Da.

Since the green strains are more energizing, it’s best to take them in the morning or during the first half of the day.

Yellow Vein Kratom for Stress Relief

We can’t talk about kratom for stress relief without mentioning yellow vein. If you haven’t found the best kratom for stress, give it a try.

A newcomer to the market, it can be a good alternative or addition to the green. It provides pain relief, stimulation, as well as improves the mood.

Because of its stimulating properties, it’s best used at the start of the day.

Some yellow strains for stress relief that you can try are Yellow Bali, Yellow Borneo, Yellow Sumatra, Yellow Thai, Yellow Indo, and Yellow Vietnam.

What’s your experience with kratom for stress relief? Which strains work best for you? How do they make you feel? Are there any strains that don’t help you ease stress? Which are they?

  • Kratom for Sleep: Best Kratom Strains to Improve Your Sleep

Kratom for Sleep: Best Kratom Strains to Improve Your Sleep

Kratom has been long known for its relaxing and pain relieving effects. And it’s not a surprise that you can also use kratom for sleep and insomnia as well.

    Why Is Sleep Important?

Sleep is absolutely needed for humans to function properly. It lets our bodies rest and heal and our brains to detox.

While a few nights of insufficient sleep may make you tired and irritated, long-term sleep deficiency can cause various sleep issues. It exposes to a higher risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke diabetes, and more.

Despite how important sleep is, we aren’t getting nearly as much sleep as we should. Most of the humans in the developed world suffer from chronic sleep deprivation. Sometimes we simply do not have enough time to sleep enough. But frequently, we simply aren’t able to sleep.

Insufficient sleep also raises the amount of stress hormone cortisol in our bodies. That not only makes us more predisposed to stress, but also can cause us to put on more weight, especially in the abdominal area.

Sleep deprived people are also more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.

    Reasons for Sleep Problems

In many cases, this is sadly a Catch 22. Inability to sleep makes us more stressed, anxious and depressed, yet stress, anxiety, and depression make it harder for us to fall asleep.

Frequently, emotions such as worry, guilt, grief as well as trauma prevent us from being able to fall asleep, too.

Sleep problems can also be caused by a variety of sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, sleep terrors, tooth grinding, and even more.

If you suffer from more serious disorders like sleep apnea, it’s always best to consult a physician before self-medicating. The reason for that is that you will not be able to diagnose yourself correctly.

However, if your sleep issues are caused by stress, anxiety, or similar, kratom can be an excellent help.

Best Strains of Kratom for Sleep

Not every strain will work in the same way. You need to choose the right kratom veins and strains and take the right dose at a suitable time to be able to get some long-deserved quality sleep.

Here are our choices of the best kratom strains for sleep:

    Red Bali Kratom for Sleep

Red Bali is one the most popular kratom strains famous for its relaxing and pain relieving effects. It’s also one of the most widely available and affordable kratom varieties.

It’s used as a means to relieve pain, stress, and anxiety. Therefore, it can be beneficial to ease any pain and discomfort as well as relax both the body and mind before sleep.

Red Bali is a potent variety and takes effect rather quickly. According to a number of users Red Bali’s effects tend to last not as long as other strains. But, if you use it to have an easier time to go to sleep, then that should not be an issue.

    Red Borneo Kratom for Sleep

Red Borneo is another users’ favorite. It alleviates pain, stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as boosts the mood. Red Borneo can be a great choice for you if you’re feeling down.

This strain can also increase concentration if you take it in lower doses.

Red Borneo is very similar to Red Bali. Despite having “Bali” in its name, Red Bali originates from Bali, but nowadays actually comes from the island of Borneo. Same as the Red Borneo strain.

Therefore, they are grown in similar circumstances and have similar effects. Less experienced users may not even notice the difference between the two.

This similarity can actually be a really good thing. If you are a fan of either Red Bali or Red Borneo, rotating both strains can help you keep your kratom tolerance low.

    Red Sumatra Kratom for Sleep

Just like Red Bali and Red Borneo, Red Sumatra has its own solid fan base. It’s effective for pain, stress and anxiety relief and can also improve the mood and cause euphoria.

The effects of Red Sumatra last longer than those of Red Borneo or Red Bali. If you purchase fresh, high-quality Red Sumatra from a reliable vendor, its effects can last up to 10 hours. That can be an excellent choice for you if you tend to wake up at night and have trouble falling back asleep.

How to Take Kratom for Sleep

Most users report feeling sedating effects of Red Bali and Red Borneo after taking 7-8 grams and those of Red Sumatra after 3-4 grams.

Nonetheless, there are others who feel nauseated after taking such an amount and have a harder time falling asleep because of that.

When taking a lower dose, users either feel stimulating effects or no effects at all. Yet, there are also some who feel relaxing and sedative effects regardless of what dose they take. Well, lucky them, right?

If you’d like to take kratom for sleep and are new to reds, we advise you to start with a smaller dose, for example, 2 grams. Then, gradually build up until you feel the desired effects.

Even if it eventually turns out that 7-8 grams work best for you, starting with a smaller dose will allow you to know what exactly works for you and avoid unpleasant side effects.

Do the same also if you’re switching to a product from a different vendor. That’s because not everyone sells the same quality kratom.

The potency will also depend on individual vendors and sometimes even batches. There are vendors who offer kratom that is twice stronger that of other vendors.

Taking a large dose of potent kratom won’t be unsafe. But you may go through unpleasant experiences such as nausea if you take a large dose of strong kratom right away. Your body may simply not be ready for it.

Kratom for sleep is best taken in the evening. Right before you head to bed or a couple of hours beforehand. You’ll know how long it’ll take for the effects to kick in for you once you take it a few times.

Make sure you take days off and rotate strains to avoid developing kratom tolerance.

    Potentiating Kratom for Sleep

There are substances that you should better not take with kratom. But, there are also those that can enhance and lengthen kratom effects.

If you’re taking kratom for sleep, you can supplement your daily dose with some valerian or chamomile. Both have soothing and relaxing effects and can help you fall asleep even faster.

Strains to Avoid If You’re Looking for Kratom for Sleep

With some exceptions, reds are usually the most relaxing and sedative. White vein kratom is its exact opposite. It’s the strain you should take if you’d like to stay alert and focused.

Therefore, avoid the whites and Green Maeng Da if your goal is to get to sleep. Or more precisely, don’t take them in the evening.

If you’re taking the energizing strains in the morning to boost energy, counterintuitively, they can also help you sleep better at night.

That is because taking energizing kratom at the same time every morning will help you establish a better routine and more regular daily schedule. You’ll be alert and active throughout the day, and, as a result, tired in the evening and more likely to fall asleep faster at night.

Are you taking kratom for sleep? Which strain is your favorite and why?

Or perhaps you’re planning to take kratom for sleep? Which strain are you willing to try?

  • Kratom Pain Relief: Top Strains and Dosage

Kratom Pain Relief: Top Strains and Dosage

Kratom is becoming increasingly more popular, and people are taking it for a variety of reasons. Along with a variety of uses, there’s a growing interest in kratom pain relief.

Kratom is beneficial because there are alkaloids in kratom leaves that bind to our receptors. Then, these alkaloids create a chemical reaction similar to that of endorphin stimulation, thus providing relief and making us feel better.

The Chemistry Behind Kratom Pain Relief

Endorphins are a type of a hormone that binds with opioid receptors in our brains. As a result, we experience an analgesic effect.

Thus, endorphins are released in the body in response to a pain, to help us cope with it more easily.

The compounds found in kratom actually come in contact with opioid receptors in a different way.

If you take a regular opioid, such as morphine, it will lead to the release of beta-arrestin proteins. These proteins create a lot of the negative effects one experiences after taking a certain opioid.

But with kratom, the situation is different.

Kratom doesn’t lead to the release of beta-arrestin proteins. This means that you won’t experience the myriad of negative effects that you would after taking opioids.

Yet, since it binds with opioid receptors, you’ll be able to experience the benefits of kratom pain relief.

Best Strains of Kratom for Pain Relief

In order to get the best of kratom for pain relief, you really need to know which strains to take. Not all kratom strains are the same, which means that you will experience different effects after each of them.

Below are our top picks for strains of kratom for pain relief.

    1. Borneo Kratom

Borneo is a very strong kratom strain, so you need to be extra careful when measuring the right dosage for it. But with its strength come its beneficial qualities.

Borneo is one of the most sedating kratom strains. It’s very good for reducing chronic pain, in muscles and joints, as well as for reducing stressanxiety, and insomnia.

Borneo kratom comes in red and green vein, but, according to many users, the red vein is better when it comes to pain relief. It’s also very good for bringing you to a state of good mood, creating a feeling of slight euphoria.

In addition to this, it’s worth mentioning that many users also find Borneo kratom a better replacement for prescription sedatives. That’s because it gives the same results without the negative side-effects.

On the other hand, white-vein Borneo is also good for both pain-relief. In addition to that, it also provides stimulation.

    2. Bali Kratom

There’s a reason why this kratom strain is one of the most popular out there. It’s because Bali is very good for treating chronic pain and providing stimulation. It is also very relaxing and helps with improving the sleep.

If you need to focus on pain relief, it’s best to go with the red vein.

    3. Green Malay Kratom

Green Malay is one of the most sought-after strains of Malay kratom, and it’s very good for anxiety relief and pain relief.

What’s interesting is that this strain has a different alkaloid profile, making it last much longer than many other kratom strains.

However, if you are looking for stronger pain relief, you may want to look into red vein Malay. It can also help you relieve stress and anxiety and may even enhance your mood.

    4. Maeng Da Kratom

All of the aforementioned strains are good for kratom pain relief, but a number of users refer to Maeng Da as probably the best.

It’s characterized by strong potency and the ability to treat chronic pain caused by all kinds of medical conditions, from arthritis to cancer, in some cases. And if consumed in higher doses, this strain will create strong sedative effects.

The Right Kratom Dosage for Pain Relief

When using kratom for any purpose, you should always take the right dose. Same goes for kratom pain relief.

First of all, you need to understand that every person is different – so the effects won’t be the same for everyone.

If you’re in severe pain, and it’s something acute, then you can take a stronger dose of kratom (6-8 grams). However, you have to be really careful here. It’s never a good idea to start on a high kratom dosage if you’re not sure you react well to a particular strain.

On the other hand, if the pain is not that strong, you can switch to using a smaller dosage on a regular basis (2-4 grams or 4-6 grams).

If you’re taling kratom in the morning and are willing to feel more enegized, take a smaller dose. However, a larger dose can be better in the evening if you’s like to wind down and relax in addition to experiencing kratom pain relief.

Therefore, you have to make sure that you can take in a certain strain without any problems, and then move on to kratom pain relief therapy. This is more complicated for people who are new to kratom, but it’s definitely the safest way.

How to Gauge the Right Kratom Dosage for Pain Relief?

You need to make sure your body can take in well.

But this is just one side of it. The correct dosage for your problem also depends on your overall health, your body weight, whether or not you consume alcohol, etc.

Once you take the first kratom dose, monitor your physical and mental state for the next hour. Some people think 45 minutes is more than enough, but we suggest you go with the full hour. If there are no side-effects, and you don’t feel any improvement after an hour, you may take some more (a gram or two).

But whatever you do, approach kratom pain relief slowly. Don’t rush into taking a lot right away. This way, you will only compromise your health. Taking it slow is definitely the best approach.

    Conclusion

You can definitely benefit from kratom pain relief, but you need to take your time and test your body first. If you pay close attention to your physical and mental reactions and experience no major side-effects, then you can use kratom on a regular basis.

You don’t have to choose a strain immediately. Allow yourself the time and freedom to test out a couple of strains and see which one works for you best. That’s how you’ll get the best of kratom for pain relief.

Have you ever taken kratom pain relief? What dosage did you take? What are your favorite strains for kratom pain relief?

  • Kratom Facts: How Does Kratom Work?

Kratom owes its properties to kratom alkaloids, compounds that have powerful medicinal properties. These range from pain management to fighting inflammation and more.

Kratom leaves contain a high concentration of alkaloids. According to the data available at the moment, there are 40 different compounds in kratom. 25 of them are alkaloids. However, these numbers may even be higher as we only have limited information on kratom available.

Most alkaloids are found in small quantities. This by no means signifies that they are not potent. Quite the contrary. Nonetheless, two of these alkaloids are more abundant than others. These are mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine.

Mitragynine makes up around 60% of all alkaloid content in kratom, while 7-hydroxymitragynine accounts to around 2%. Yet, their exact concentration varies per each individual strain.

Mitragynine is responsible for kratom’s stimulating effects. Thus, you are more likely to find a higher concentration of it in the green and whites strains, for instance, in Green Maeng Da.

Meanwhile, 7-hydroxymitragynine may be less prevalent in kratom, but it’s much more potent. It causes kratom’s relaxing and sedative properties. Thus, it is the most abundant in the red strains like Red Bali.

The FDA lists kratom as a “Drug of Concern” and refers to it as an opioid. States and cities that ban kratom most often list in under Schedule I synthetic drugs or opioids.

Due to kratom’s controversial nature, studies have been done by a group of researchers to make sure kratom remains legal. It’s known as the Kratom 8-Factor Analysis. It has proven the FDA claims inaccurate.

    So, How Does Kratom Work?

Just like alkaloids in coffee, those found in kratom also affect the human brain. Mitragynine binds with mu opioid receptors in the brain. These are receptors that are responsible for drug addictions as they mediate positive reinforcement.

But, not so fast! This does not automatically mean that kratom is an addicting drug. Things are a little more complicated than that. So, keep reading!

When a person responds to certain stimuli such as a piece of chocolate cake, winning in a computer game, or getting praised, that activates the reward circuits in their brain. That, in turn, produces dopamine, one of the feel-good hormones. The more often this person reinforces that same action and activates reward circuitry, the stronger these connections in the brain become.

As a result, this person starts craving these stimuli in order to feel good. And the stronger these connections, they more the person craves that what is giving them this satisfaction.

But that’s not all there is to it when it comes to kratom and drug addiction though. Same as craving chocolate is not nearly the same as being addicted to drugs.

    There’s also a protein called beta-arrestin 2.

Beta-arrestin 2 is the one that is responsible for mediating behavioral effects of drugs. When it’s activated, addictive behaviors form.

Research shows that kratom does bind with the same receptors as opioids and helps our brain produce dopamine that, in turn, helps manage pain better. However, in contrast with drugs it does not recruit the beta-arrestin 2 protein. As a result, it does not get activated.

So, humans simply experience analgesic effects without forming an addictive behavior.

Because of this, kratom does not have the touted abuse potential. In fact, it’s about as addictive as coffee. Alter all, kratom and coffee are cousins.

Kratom also causes significantly lower respiratory depression.

When it comes to stimulating effects, kratom alkaloids activate receptors responsible for adrenalin and block those responsible for serotonin. Thus, the boost of adrenalin and lower levels of serotonin help us to stay alert.

How Long Does Kratom Stay in Your System?

The effects of kratom last for several hours. Depending on the kratom dosage and the strain it could be anywhere from 2-8 hours for kratom effects to wear off by half. This is kratom half-life. However, the average is usually around 4-5 hours.

Nonetheless, kratom does not completely leave the body during this time. It takes around 24 hours for your body to completely eliminate it, yet trace amounts of it remain in your system for up to 7 days.

    More Research on Kratom Needed

Yet, due to limited research currently available on kratom, the information we know about kratom may yet be only the tip of the iceberg.

In late 2018, the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) granted $3.5 million to US College of Pharmacy for 2-year kratom research. Hopefully, this gives us more insight into the effects and benefits of kratom and helps keep kratom legal.

    What Is Kratom?

Kratom (aka Mitragyna Speciosa) is a herbal plant with many benefits and is native to the Southeast Asia – mainly Indonesia, Malaysia, Bali, and Thailand.

This tree-like herbal plant has great medicinal usage and has been a part of Eastern Medicine for centuries. The herb is capable of treating a myriad of health problems.

It acts as a natural stimulant and mood enhancer. Kratom has amazing pain-relieving properties as well.

    It’s capable of:

Kratom consumers tend to feel motivated.

The herb has deep ties to Thai and Indonesian culture and has been cultivated for thousands of years.

Some people mistake it for a dangerous recreational drug but don’t be fooled. It has a lot more to offer than just a “high.”

    Lesser-Known Benefits of Kratom

This herb tends to have mild euphoric effects brought along with a sense of motivation, and the ability to stay calm and composed, even under high-pressure environments.

What’s more, the herb is shown to treat dependence on substances such as opiates, alcohol, medication, etc. It helps wean-off the effects of hardcore drugs as well.

Those suffering from depression, chronic pain, and anxiety have found it to be incredibly helpful in combating symptoms.

    Map of Southeast Asia

    History of Kratom

Kratom is native to Southeast Asia. There indigenous people have been using it as a source of additional energy and medicinal plant to relieve pain, cough, diarrhea, and more.

Local cultures do not consider kratom a drug. Nonetheless, Thailand, one of the countries kratom is native to, banned it in August 1943.

Despite many anti-kratom claims, it did not occur because it is a dangerous drug. Instead, due to its highly beneficial effects, the herb interfered with opium sales that spiked because of wars. Kratom wasn’t taxed as opium was, and it wasn’t as profitable to the Thai government.

While the east has known the beneficial medicinal herb for centuries, in the west, however, the plant is relatively new.

In the 1830s, Dutch botanist Pieter Willem Korthals served as the official botanist for the Dutch East India Service. During this time, he made multiple discoveries including Mitragyna speciosa. It’s often suggested that Korthals named the plant Mitragyna because the shape of its leaves and flowers resembles that of a bishop’s mitre.

When citing a plant’s botanical name, the name of the botanist who discovered it appears abbreviated in parentheses after the plant’s name. For Korthals, this abbreviation is Korth., a name that may also use to refer to kratom.

In the 1930s, English botanist Isaac Henry Burkill and Malaysian botanist Mohammed Haniff reported the herb as an effective means of reducing harm in opiate users in the 19th century. This appeared in the Cambridge Journal of Asiatic Society.

    Types of Kratom

Factors like where it comes from, the color of the veins, etc, form the basis of kratom strain classification.

    For instance –

    • Kratom leaves harvested from Thailand usually have more energetic effects
    • Indonesian leaves usually have mild sedative effects
    • Malaysian leaves are popular for their ‘moderate’ qualities
    • The leaves coming from Bali aka Borneo provide a mix of sedative and relaxing effects.

Then there’s the classification based on color namely red-veingreen-vein, and white-vein.

You will mostly find it in powdered form, which tends to have a greenish shade.  You can also find it in capsule form or tea; however, it’s not as common.

    Red Vein Kratom

The color of its stem and the veins, as suggested by the name, tends to be red. This is the most popular type of kratom sold today. The total sales of red vein kratom are more than the sales of white and green combined.

Benefits of Red Vein Kratom Leaves

Red vein leaves are recommended for beginners (provided they come from a reliable source).

    • The leaves tend to have a pleasant, relaxing, and calming effect on the mind; elevating a sense of optimism, motivation, and wellness.
    • They act as a natural muscle relaxant
    • Helps with insomnia
    • A natural alternative to pharmaceutical drugs and painkillers
    • Helpful in fighting withdrawal symptoms of opiate drugs

Red vein leaves are further divided into different categories and each type has different properties and effects. The leaves coming from Thailand have mild sedative effects, while others such as Red Sumatra are known to uplift mood.

The intensity and the spectrum of effects also depend on the dosage. When taken in small doses, red vein strains promote tranquility and peace of mind.

    White Vein Kratom

White Vein Kratom strains are popular for being a mood enhancer or stimulant. The true effects depend on several factors namely – the quality of the product, the amount taken, the tolerance level of the consumer, etc.

White vein is commonly the most uplifting in nature than all other strain types. A growing number of people are finding it to be a good replacement for caffeine to stay alert, cheerful, and focused.

People who work hard and long hours will find it particularly helpful in improving focus, motivation, and concentration.

Those susceptible to gloominess, depression, and exhaustion also tend to greatly benefit from this type.

    Green Vein Kratom

This particular kratom strain type lies between red and white. It comes with mild energy-boosting and mood-enhancing properties, while also being calm.

Reportedly, consuming green vein leaves results in –

    • Enhanced alertness and focus
    • A feeling of being ‘in the flow’

Unlike most analgesics, this one doesn’t cause drowsiness which makes it the ideal type for treating a spectrum of pain and bodily discomforts. The effects of green vein kratom leaves are more subtle in nature when compared to red or white.

    Fighting Social Fears

Green Vein Kratom strains are particularly known to fight social fears. The user tends to experience a lowering of inhibitions, and have less regard for people’s opinion and views. They immediately feel more confident, even in social settings. Many people with social anxiety report improvements while taking it.

Some of the known effects of this strain are – a cheerful and friendly disposition, and feeling ‘comfortable in your skin’.

    Mixing Kratom Strains

Mixing different color strains is a common practice that gives more rounded and sophisticated results.

The properties of green veins tend to curb the overstimulating effects of white veins, and analgesic effects of red strains, etc.

Mixing strains are best suited for experienced users who have tried several different strains, and know the effects of each.

    Preparing Kratom Tea

Different Ways to Take Kratom Powder

As mentioned earlier, kratom is not a recreational drug.  You don’t smoke or snort kratom powder; rather you ingest it orally. Take a look at some of the popular ways to take it:

    1. Kratom Tea

To make tea, mix some kratom powder in water and let it simmer for thirty minutes. After that, you let the mix sit and then strain the liquid off. Most people report the effects of drinking kratom tea as – “better and more consistent.” This method is more time consuming than others, but it’s one way to go about it. The taste of the tea isn’t bad either, especially if you add honey or stevia. One can drink it both hot and cold, and try different kratom tea recipes to change things up.

    2. Toss and Wash

This is the most common way of taking kratom. Toss and Wash is also the simplest way of getting it into your system. Measure the amount you want to take and gently tip it into your mouth. After that, just swill it lightly and wash it down with water. Most people typically go with a spoonful, however, be sure to consult a doctor first if you have a medical condition for which you’re taking it.

    3. With Yogurt or Juice

A lot of people recommend adding kratom powder to yogurt. It’s good to go with a flavored yogurt in order to mask the powder’s taste. Most people prefer to gulp it down in one go to avoid enduring the taste which is not particularly good. However, there are some proponents who are big on taking it with yogurt.

Alternatively, you can also mix your favorite powder with a juice of your choice. Orange, grapefruit, and pineapple juice can not only mask the bitter taste but also act as potentiators.

    4. Mixed with a Protein Shake or Smoothie

A lot of people claim to get a better effect after mixing kratom powder with milk or protein shake; although there is no scientific evidence to support it.  Sounds tasty though!

If protein shakes aren’t something you normally take, try different smoothies. This approach allows you to mask the take and up your intake of veggies and fruits.

    5. In Capsule Form

Taking kratom in pill form is not always recommended. On the plus side, you get to skip the taste of the powder. But, on the flip side, you might need to take several in order to experience the full effect. In some cases, you might not notice any results until you have taken up to 10 pills. It’s best to know your dosage or ‘sweet spot’ before using capsules.

    How to Dose on Kratom?

Everyone is different. Different people may find varying levels of satisfaction with different dosages. However, it’s best to start low until you’re able to find that ‘sweet spot, where you get the maximum effects with just the right amount.

Ideally, it’s best to start with a small dose of 2 grams or even less. Wait some time and see if it starts to kick in, then slowly up it a notch.

It’s worth noting that although a small dose may not give you any effect, crossing the ‘tipping point,’ even by one gram, could make you feel ‘heady’ and ‘uncomfortable.’ Therefore, it’s best to start carefully when taking kratom for the first time, with special consideration towards dosage.

The moment nausea kicks-in; it’s a sign that the dose was higher than your body can take. If taken in large amounts of 10 grams or more, you might end-up puking.

Note – The ideal dose may vary depending on the quality of the product. High-quality kratom should begin to kick in with a dosage as low as 2-3 grams.

    Important Tips While Taking Kratom

It goes without saying that any herb/plant that supposedly has psychoactive properties should be consumed with care, and with full consideration for possible side-effects caused by accidental overdoses.

    The same goes for kratom.

This section covers points that are worth mentioning when taking kratom. Especially if you’re starting out for the very first time, it’s important to keep these in mind –

    1. Stay Hydrated

Like coffee, kratom tends to have diuretic effects on the body. You might feel slightly dehydrated after taking it. Therefore, it’s important to drink plenty of water. If you begin to feel slightly ‘heady’, it’s a sign your body is in need of fluids. Bring water with you while going out and about.

Since kratom powder consists of primarily insoluble fiber, t’s not uncommon to get kratom constipation. Make sure to stay hydrated to avoid that.

    2. Take It on an Empty Stomach

You can experiment with taking kratom even when not on an empty stomach, but only when you have found your sweet spot. For beginners, it’s best to start on an empty stomach because when your stomach is full, you need higher amounts to achieve the full effect.

    3. Different Strain Types May Need Different Doses

Another point worth noting is that not all strain types have the same spectrum and intensity of effects. You need to establish different ‘sweet spots’ for different strain types. Some strains may affect you more with a small dose, while others need a higher dose. Therefore, it’s always best to start with small amounts.

    4. Maintain a Log

You might want to start noting down the details of every dose when starting out. The details can help you keep track of factors like the timing, quality, quantity, strain type consumed, etc. You might want to write down your experience and the effects. Keeping a log helps you refer back to each experience and weigh the differences between them as you build on your doses.

What to Expect from a Typical Dose

Let it be known that different people may have different experiences with kratom. But, most people tend to feel intense warmth starting to build-up on the inside. The tip of your nose, hands, and toes may feel a little warm. Most people experience a lowering of their inhibition and a sudden burst of ‘confidence’ like never experienced before.

But, as mentioned earlier, not all people may have such strong sensations. In some users, the results are quite mild/subtle.

    Managing Expectations

While it’s true that the effects of kratom can be life-changing and ‘obvious’, it’s important to be realistic in terms of what to expect. Do not expect drastic improvements in the quality of your life with it. Having too many expectations or unrealistic expectations could actually leave you feeling disappointed afterwards.

What Are the Various Effects of Kratom?

Kratom is quite unique because a low/moderate dose will typically be mildly stimulating. But, a high dose will almost always be sedating.

Kratom leaves have active alkaloids that give both sedative and stimulant-like effects. A lot of people equate the effects of kratom with that of opiates. This is because of the presence of its alkaloids.

Although kratom follows a similar action mechanism as an opiate, it is actually as addictive as coffee. As a matter of fact, kratom is best known for overcoming addiction from real opiate drugs.

    Effects as a Stimulant

Kratom can provide a boost in energy (sometimes sexual energy) and a sense of heightened alertness. The person may suddenly feel an urge to do things they wouldn’t normally do.

A lot of people may suddenly find the strength to perform tough and monotonous physical jobs with ease. Since kratom has antidepressant properties, it tends to elevate mood.

One may become more friendly, talkative, and sociable. Kratom stimulates the person on a cognitive level rather than a physical level. That’s why the effects are different from that of typical CNS stimulants like amphetamine drugs or caffeine.

    Effects as a Sedative-Euphoric-Analgesic

At this level, the person becomes less sensitive to emotional/physical pain and may appear calmer than usual. There’s the induced feeling of general pleasure and a meditative state.

In higher dosages, these sensations may also be accompanied by slight sweating or itching. The pupils become constricted and some people may experience slight nausea. However, nausea subsides with a bit of rest or by simply lying down.

A lot of users may suddenly find themselves having a deeper appreciation for music. The experience is best enjoyed by lying down with your eyes closed in a slightly dark room. A lot of people enter the state of wakeful dreaming where they find a part of their mind entering the ‘dream-like state’ with one foot in the real world.

Can One Use Kratom to Treat Pain?

Yes, kratom is an effective analgesic. As a matter of fact, it’s one of the most helpful analgesics (other than opium). A lot of people use this herb to remedy chronic pains and aches and manage health conditions such as fibromyalgia and arthritis.

Can Kratom Be Used to Overcome Opiate Addiction?

Among the most popular/traditional uses of kratom is – using it to overcome addiction to opiates. This is a widespread problem not only for people who use opiate drugs illegally, but also for those who have been prescribed opiate pain medication.

Many people are searching for an effective remedy to overcome this addiction. A lot of kratom consumers have found it to be extremely helpful in this context. This herb contains alkaloids that act on the opioid receptors in the brain. Therefore, it can be used as a substitute for opium-based drugs to overcome withdrawals.

Many people who switch to kratom as an opiate substitute found that they were slowly able to reduce the dosage, and eventually end it without going through any of the uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms.

Therefore, it’s safe to say that although kratom carries opiate receptor agonists; its pharmacology is very different from opium-based drugs. It’s different in a way that makes it abundantly useful in overcoming dependence on opium.

Note – although kratom is popular for overcoming this addiction, it’s best to consult a physician first before going on any kind of self-medication.

    Is Kratom Legal and Safe?

Kratom is a grey market product in the US, even though millions of people use it safely and responsibly while having little or no negative side effects.

It is not FDA approved, and you often find it labeled “not for human consumption.” Kratom vendors are not legally allowed to state it’s uses and benefits.

All of this causes confusion and leads people to believe it is a dangerous drug or something to avoid altogether.

The reason behind this is the “Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994.”  Under the DSHEA, herbs, and supplements sold in the US before 1994 can be marketed and sold without FDA approval.

Kratom did not make the cut.  There’s currently no evidence that shows it was available in the US before 1994.

So, kratom is in a legal grey area, and it’s hard to get the positive word out.  However, it is legal to purchase in most states as a raw botanical.

As long as you use a reputable source, kratom is completely safe and can help with many different things.
